Notes

  • -  Summary: Richard was supposed to come downtown for work at 3 pm. When he heard about the attacks, he hitched a ride to his precinct. He remembers everyone pulled over on the Long Island Expressway, staring at Manhattan. It seemed like a normal workday when he first got to the precinct. He understands now that the officials in charge did not want to send everyone in all at once, but he was upset at the time. He heard police officers calling for help over the radio, but they had to wait at the station house. He credits his training for helping him keep his emotions in check throughout the situation. He started helping with Police Organization Providing Peer Assistance (POPPA), and helped them set up to provide numerous debriefings at once. At the time, he was still spending shifts at Ground Zero. He thinks many people didn't realize the emotional toll that the work was taking on themselves. He thanks POPPA for giving him the coping tools he needed.
