- - Significance: The Bridgeport Covered Bridge is 233 feet long and was originally built as part of a toll road intended to serve the development of the Comstock Lode around Virginia City, Nevada. It is a Howe Truss bridge with an auxiliary arch. // The Bridgeport Bridge was built in 1862 to replace an earlier span that washed out in a flood. It was an integral part of the Virginia Turnpike, a heavily traveled route through the Sierras during the gold rush era. The bridge is significant as one of the longest single-span surviving covered bridges in the United States.
