- - Significance: The General Simon Bolivar Memorial is a contributing historic asset that is significant to the more extensive history of American Landscape Architecture and Modernist Landscape Architecture in the United States. Most importantly, the Simon Bolivar statue symbolizes the diplomatic relationship between Venezuela and the United States and Bolivar's significance as a historical figure of the independent movement of Latin America from the Spanish empire. Known as the "Liberator of the Americas," Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) was a Venezuelan military and political leader who led Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Panama to independence from the Spanish Empire, ruling over the united nation of Gran Columbia before they became separate countries.
