Notes
- - Significance: The Eau Gallie River Bridge is located in the City of Melbourne, just west of US-1/N Harbor City Boulevard. The bridge was first documented in 2013 as part of the field survey for the Cultural Resource Assessment Report for the All Aboard Florida Passenger Rail Project from Orlando to West Palm Beach prepared by Janus Research for All Aboard Florida Operations, LLC. The Eau Gallie River Bridge falls under the F.3 property type outlined in Florida's Historic Railroad Resources. As per this document, in order for railroad structures, such as bridges, to be individually eligible for nomination they must be "exceptional examples of a type of architecture or engineering...[and] retain their original appearance to a high degree." The Eau Gallie River bridge is an exceptional example of a deck plate girder bridge and retains a high degree of historic integrity. While the western tracks along the Eau Gallie River Bridge have been removed, the eastern tracks remain and this alteration does not detract from the bridge's historic appearance. A preliminary assessment of the Eau Gallie Bridge and twenty-one other bridges along the FEC mainline between Jacksonville and West Palm Beach was conducted as part of the 2010 FEC Amtrak Passenger Rail Study Environmental Assessment, Duval to Miami-Dade Counties, Florida conducted by Janus Research and Panamerican Consultants for the Florida Department of Transportation, District 4. Of those bridges surveyed three were designed as deck plate girder bridges on a steel piers substructure with concrete footings and cross bents: Eau Gallie River Bridge, Crane Creek Bridge, and Sebastian River Bridge. These bridges each spanned several hundred feet and were the only fixed bridges surveyed to be that long. Other bridges surveyed that were 550' or longer contained moveable portions, such as a bascule. The remaining fixed bridges in the survey were 300' or less in length and had more common designs. The Eau Gallie River Bridge was considered eligible for listing in the National Register as part of this study due to the large distance the fixed bridge spans over a body of water. The bridge was determined to be individually eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (National Register) by the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) in 2013 under Criterion C in the area of Engineering as an example of a deck plate girder bridge that spans a substantial distance and retains its historic physical integrity. Additionally, the Eau Gallie River Bridge is a contributing resource to the FEC Railway as a linear historic district, which was determined eligible for inclusion in the National Register by the SHPO under Criterion A in the areas of Transportation and Community Planning and Development due to significance related to the development of Florida's east coast.
