About this Item

Title

  • Chancellorsville, Va. Position of the 11th Corps at 6 p.m. May 2nd 1863 Maj Genl O.O. Howard commanding

Summary

  • Map shows the position of Union and Confederate troops in the area surrounding Chancellorsville, Va., at 6 p.m. on May 2, 1863. By late afternoon on May 2, Stonewall Jackson's troops had moved deeper into the Wilderness and were within striking distance of the 1st Corps, U.S. Army of the Potomac, P.O. Howard, commanding. Jackson gave the order to attack at 6 p.m., pushing the Federal outposts back to the main position and the disorganized mass toward Chancellorsville. Lee, on the Union left flank, opened fire on Meade's corps to draw attention away from Jackson. With visibility difficult and darkness falling, Jackson, in a forward position, was mistakenly shot by a Confederate soldier. While a victory for the Confederate Army, this battle also resulted in the loss of one of its greatest commanders.
