  • Memoir of Anderson recounting his Civil War service in Company D, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, compiled from his diary and letters to his family. Documents the regiment's service during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862, the battles of Chancellorsville (Va.) and Gettysburg (Pa.), in operations against guerrillas and renegades in east Tennessee in the winter of 1863-1864, and under General William T. Sherman in the Atlanta Campaign; the capture and occupation of Atlanta, Ga.; Sherman's March to the Sea; siege of Savannah, Ga.; and Sherman's March through the Carolinas. Anderson makes observations on camp life, casualties, crime in the U.S. Army, depredations, disease and medical care, enlistment bounties and recruitment, foraging expeditions, marches, military paroles, morale and the attitude of noncombatants, prisoners of war, recruitment, Union sentiment in the South, and Union spies. Includes a photograph of Anderson.
