Notes

  • -  Original and carbon copies of telegrams, typed letters, and bank forms exchanged between Dr. Robert Russa Moton and the new Dunbar National Bank/Paul Laurence Dunbar Apartments in New York, a joint project funded by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The bank was established by Rockefeller family interests in New York City in September 1928 in response to the perception that African Americans lacked banking accommodations responsive to their needs and that, with 100,000 black New Yorkers, such a bank stood a good chance of becoming profitable. Although the bank was not owned or operated by African Americans, it was operated for them, and several, including Dr. Moton, were members of the board of directors; others were employed as tellers, clerks, bookkeepers, and typist. Selections reproduced as facsimile page images: 11 pages.
