Virginia Hamilton was born in Ohio in 1936. Among her more than 40 childrens’ books, novels, and biographies, Hamilton’s most well-known titles include The People Could Fly (1985), The Planet of Junior Brown (1971), and Many Thousand Gone: African Americans From Slavery to Freedom (1993). She received the National Book Award and Newbery Medal for M.C. Higgins, The Great; a MacArthur Fellowship; and the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for her body of work. She died in Dayton, Ohio, in 2002.
