Notes
- - Significance: The Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) Historic District is significant for its association with the development of American airship technology in the early twentieth century. Encompassing approximately 245.7 acres within Lakehurst area of JB MDL, the district is comprised of 70 buildings, structures, and objects that contribute to the interpretation of the former naval station as a vital piece of defense history from 1921 to 1962. Naval Air Station (NAS) Lakehurst served as the nation's principal airship base and was the site of numerous significant events in the Naval LTA program, including the erection of the largest hangar in the United States in 1921; the construction of the first rigid airship in the United States, Shenandoah, in 1923; the operation of rigid airships Shenandoah, Los Angeles, and Akron; the development and operation of blimps for anti-submarine warfare during World War II and the early Cold War; and the development and use of blimps as aerial early warning platforms during the early stages of the Cold War. Additionally, the base has a significant role in commercial airship history as the destination of the first commercial transatlantic flight of the airship Graf Zeppelin in 1928; being the beginning and end point of Graf Zeppelin's 1929 circumnavigation of the world; and the site of the first regularly scheduled trans-Atlantic commercial flights via the airship Hindenburg, which crashed at Lakehurst in May 1937. The residential, industrial, and administrative facilities connected by a strategic site plan within the LTA Historic District embody the district's function as complete and cohesive community unit centered on advancing the goals of the Lighter-Than-Air aviation program. The LTA Historic District was initially identified in 1994 as a significant historic district by Baystate Environmental Consultants and was determined eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for significance under Criteria A and C by the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office (NJHPO) on June 27, 1995. At the time of nomination for inclusion in the NRHP in 2003, the district contained 90 contributing and 22 non-contributing resources constructed during a period of significance from 1921 to 1945 at the core of Naval Air Engineering Station (NAES) Lakehurst. When reevaluated by NAES Lakehurst staff in 2003, proposed modifications to the original district recommendation included a revised district boundary, an extension of the period of significance to 1962, and an updated assessment of 74 contributing and 10 non-contributing resources. In 2022, the Argonne National Laboratory prepared the Lighter-Than-Air Historic District Management Plan and Condition Assessment at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. This document verified the revised period of significance and district boundary proposed by NAES Lakehurst staff in 2003 and adjusted the number to 11 contributing and 14 noncontributing resources, with three demolished resources included in the inventory of noncontributing resources.
