  • -  Geraldine Johnson described Ila Patton's quilts as "not fancy, but very interesting and well made." They include utility crazy and strip quilts, as well as a recent Cathedral Window, which is a novelty construction popular in the 1970s. The variety of Mrs. Patton's quilts, her recollections of learning to quilt from her grandmother, and her primary interest in making quilts for family rather than to sell are some of the key elements brought out in this "very useful and informative" interview.
  • -  Transcription: GJ: Did you dye the linings at all? / IP: Yes, I'd dye 'em different colors. And I have dyed part of the tops that I'd set the squares, if I'd pieced 'em in squares, I'd dye some you know to set that up with? Red, or green, yellow, something like that. / GJ: You mean, now, if you pieced 'em in squares then you'd have a different color in the [yeah] squares so [yeah] you'd dye some [yeah]. / IP: Put in different colors. Or strip 'em through, sometimes we'd have blocks, but that's been years ago, I don't think I have any of 'em. Now, I might have. And I'd dye the strips to go through, you know, about, say about four inches I guess, strips, and strip 'em clear through. Cross ways. Or in diamond shapes. That made 'em pretty. Set 'em up pretty. / GJ: So that would be if you'd, if you would piece 'em in blocks [yeah] strips running in between [yeah] you dyed 'em. / IP: And then you could, I have pieced em in crazy. You know, strips, clear through, then run a colored strip through, about a four-inch, three or four inch, and that made 'em pretty too. Different color between hem rows that you'd already pieced.
