Notes

  • -  Geraldine Johnson described Ila Patton's quilts as "not fancy, but very interesting and well made." They include utility crazy and strip quilts, as well as a recent Cathedral Window, which is a novelty construction popular in the 1970s. The variety of Mrs. Patton's quilts, her recollections of learning to quilt from her grandmother, and her primary interest in making quilts for family rather than to sell are some of the key elements brought out in this "very useful and informative" interview.
  • -  Transcription: GJ: Is that, is that Little Dutch Girl, is that, that's an applique, isn't it? / IP: Yeah, that's right. Yeah, I fixed them Dutch Girls, Dutch Boys. / GJ: When did you do those? / IP: Well, a few winters ago. / GJ: So you've done them more recently. / IP: Yes, um hmm. I'd just set down, you know, with the needle, part of the time, sometimes, I'd use the machine, but set down with the needle and go around all of it. You had to pin 'em all on, on your block, so you could get 'em even all at the time. Go around 'em time you go around the hat, you know, and the hands, and the skirt and the feet, took a right smart little bit. / GJ: I can imagine. Where'd you get that pattern, the little Dutch Boy and the little Dutch Girl? / IP: From my neighbor. I got one from my neighbor that was always a-piecing quilts. And the Little Dutch Boy, I just cut it myself. / GJ: Oh, you did? / IP: I just made my own pattern. / GJ: How did you figure that one out? / IP: Well, I just, I seen the picture somewhere, and I just decided, I believe I'd, I could do it myself. And I didn't order no pattern, I just cut it out, fixed it, that one I showed you up there. / GJ: That's interesting. / IP: I had seen a quilt top, and, that was already pieced, and I kind of kept it in mind, and I just, just drawed it off, you know, and blocked it out and, cut it out and pieced it.
