Notes

  • -  Geraldine Johnson described Ila Patton's quilts as "not fancy, but very interesting and well made." They include utility crazy and strip quilts, as well as a recent Cathedral Window, which is a novelty construction popular in the 1970s. The variety of Mrs. Patton's quilts, her recollections of learning to quilt from her grandmother, and her primary interest in making quilts for family rather than to sell are some of the key elements brought out in this "very useful and informative" interview.
  • -  Transcription: GJ: Are those the only appliqued patterns that you've done, then? / IP: Oh, yeah, I think, unless I helped my granddaughter on a Bird quilt, I think, years ago. I helped her fix a Bird of a all the states. I helped her do that and I believe we had to fix it like that. Appliqued. Around. I think that's all I ever did. Well, sometimes, now, these crazy quilts, strips, I would do them that way. / GJ: How do you mean? / IP: I would, uh, needlework 'em around. And that made 'em look pretty, make a kind of a feather stitch around all of it. Takes a long time, but it made 'em awful pretty. And you use a different color thread, on a certain piece, you know, you'd use a thread to match it and make it look pretty. / GJ: Yeah, those are fancy when you do that [yeah] little, [yeah] like embroidery stitch [yeah] around. / IP: Yeah, yeah, it made 'em look a heap fancier and prettier. / GJ: What made you do that sometimes? / IP: Well, just to pass the time, just to be a doing something. Sit down to do that, and--instead of just sewing straight and fixing together, I'd fix 'em like that. I called it kind of the feather stitch.
