Notes
- - Block Island Southeast Light was relocated 245' north-northwest on the original land parcel in 1993. The latitude and longitude coordinates reflect the building's new location; however, the street address remains the same.
- - Significance: The Southeast Light, which is a designated National Historic Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is nationally significant in the areas of maritime history, transportation, and architecture. Constructed in 1875 by the U.S. Lighthouse Board (now subsumed within the U.S. Coast Guard), the lighthouse has provided a primary and invaluable aid to navigation in the hazardous waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Rhode Island Sound off Rhode Island and has attached to it a number of superlatives that make it an important example of a U.S. Lighthouse Board navigational aid. The lighthouse marks the first island landfall for ships approaching the New England coast from the south and east, has the highest elevation of any lighthouse in New England, and contains one of only 12 functioning first-order Fresnel lenses in the country. Southeast Light exhibits a unique Victorian Gothic architectural design that exemplifies a relatively brief era of architectural sophistication at the Light House Board and provides one of the U.S.'s most powerful expressions of the romanticism inherent in the function and setting of a lighthouse.
