Title
- Moroccan-Jewish Musical Memory: The Abraham Pinto Collection
Summary
- On October 5, 1968, Abraham Pinto, a businessman from New York City originally from Tangier, Morocco, offered the Library of Congress a collection of tapes containing approximately 30 hours of Jewish liturgical music recordings, which he had undertaken on his own initiative. These recordings later became part of the Library’s American Folklife Center collections. This lecture provides an overview of the interaction between Pinto and the Library of Congress regarding the Library’s Moroccan sound collections, and highlights the involvement of other institutions with his recordings. Listeners will be introduced to the sounds of Jewish Morocco, as preserved by Pinto more than half a century ago. After the lecture, an Andalus concert was performed in the Great Hall. This program was made possible through the generous support of the Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative at the Lilly Endowment.
