Title
- Homegrown Concert of Tejas Roots Music with Nick Gaitan
Summary
- The Nick Gaitan Band, based in Houston, Texas, celebrates the vibrant musical cultures of Tejano and Chicano communities on the Gulf Coast of the United States. The group blends the genres of conjunto, cumbia, Louisiana swamp pop, country, and rhythm and blues, creating a sound they call “Tejas Roots Music.” This concert took place as part of a symposium honoring recipients of the Community Collection Grant (CCG) – an initiative of the American Folklife Center, funded by the Mellon Foundation, to support community documentation in various parts of the United States. Band leader Nick Gaitan contributed to a CCG project titled, “Sonidos de Houston: Documenting the City’s Chicano Music Scene.” This performance was also held in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and as part of the American Folklife Center’s 2025 Homegrown Concert Series.
