Title
- Keynote Talk for the 18th Annual Mongolian Studies Conference
Summary
The 2026 keynote talk is by Dr. Christopher P. Atwood, “The Secret History of the Mongols’ Little Brother: The Campaigns of Chinggis Khan, Its Tangled Fate and Its Significance”.
The Secret History of the Mongols is one of the literary wonders of the world. It was written in the thirteenth century by an unknown author. The book combines history and verse to chronicle the life of Chinggis Khan and the empire he founded. It follows Chinggis Khan from his early years, through battles, alliances, rivalries and betrayals, as he forms a unified Mongolia whose hordes swept across the steppe and remade the medieval world. It was a world of vast nomad tent cities and warriors on horseback. Less well known is the Secret History’s “little brother,” “The Campaigns of Chinggis Khan.” In this talk, Professor Atwood will discuss the relationship between these two accounts and the significance of both for understanding Mongolian history.
