Appendix J - Data Provenance Subfields

MARC 21 Bibliographic
December 2025

Subfield Codes
  • $7 - Data provenance (R)
  • $e - Data provenance (R)   [856 and 857 only]
  • $l (el) - Data provenance (R)   [760-788 only]
  • $y - Data provenance (R)   [533 and 800-830 only]

Descriptions of subfields that are used to link provenance data in a field to other data within the same field. These subfields are defined for multiple fields in the format, and thus their descriptions are brought together in this appendix. The subfields are included in field level subfield lists wherever they are defined, with pointers to this appendix.

Data provenance subfields are not currently defined in all fields of the Bibliographic format. For fields that do contain the subfield, it is usually a subfield $7. For fields that use a previously defined $7 for other purposes, alternative subfield codes for data provenance are used and are listed below.

SUBFIELD CODES

$7 - Data provenance

Subfield $7 contains a data provenance value for a related subfield or related subfields in the same subfield string. If the value is preceded by a MARC Data Provenance Category code or a MARC Data Provenance Relationship code, then this is enclosed by parentheses. If the value is preceded by both a MARC Data Provenance Category code and a MARC Data Provenance Relationship code, then these are separated by a forward slash and enclosed by parentheses. A MARC Data Provenance Category code precedes a MARC Data Provenance Relationship code when both are recorded.

$e - Data provenance   [856 and 857 only]

Subfield $e is defined for data provenance in fields 856 and 857. The definition is identical to that of subfield $7 (Data provenance).

$l (el) - Data provenance   [760-788 only]

Subfield $l is defined for data provenance in fields 760-788. The definition is identical to that of subfield $7 (Data provenance).

$y - Data provenance   [533 and 800-830 only]

Subfield $y is defined for data provenance in fields 533 and 800-830. The definition is identical to that of subfield $7 (Data provenance).
