MARC Fast-Track Proposal No. 2018-FT03: Defining Subfield $2 in Field 055

1. BACKGROUND

Field 055 is currently defined in the Authority format as follows:

Authority field 055 was brought from the CanMARC formats into MARC 21 during harmonization.  This field can be read as holding call numbers assigned by, and used by Library and Archives Canada (LAC), and also as holding call numbers from classification schedules maintained by LAC, or by other organizations in Canada for use on Canadian records (PS8000, Class FC, KF-Modified).

It has been assumed that it would be possible to manually discern the schedule from which a number has been chosen.  In consultation with the LC Policy and Standards Division currently undertaking revisions of the DCM appendix Z1, LAC is requesting the the addition of subfield $2 (Number source) to enable explicit recording of the source.

2. PROPOSED CHANGES

2.1. In the Field Definition and Scope of Field 055 of the MARC 21 Authority Format, include a standard instruction found in all other series call number fields.

Marked up (additions in bold italics):

Field Definition and Scope
Call number for a series assigned in Canada if the institution has classified all or part of the series as a collected set or with a main series (646, Series Classification Practice, subfield $a, code c or m).

Field 055 may also contain the volumes/dates to which the number applies. Varying numbers for different ranges of volumes/dates within a series or different copies or sets are contained in separate 055 fields.

Note that call numbers/class numbers to be recorded in field 055 include those assigned from the Library of Congress classification schedules, and those from schedules specially developed by Library and Archives Canada for Canadian history and literature.

2.2. In Field 055 of the MARC 21 Authority Format, define non-repeatable subfield $2.  The name of the subfield is modelled on the similar subfield in field 065 (Other Classification Number) of the Authority format.  The description of the subfield is modelled on field 055 of the Bibliographic format:

$2 - Number source (NR)
Source list or scheme from which the call/class number was assigned.

Code from: Classification Scheme Source Codes.

130 #0 $aCanadian historic sites
055 #4 $aFC18$bC353$2fcps$5CaQMG
[Call number assigned from Class FC: a Classification for Canadian History.]
