SOURCE: PCC Standing Committee on Standards
SUMMARY: This paper proposes a renaming and redefinition of subfield $d (Title of person) in field 368 (Other Attributes of Person or Corporate Body) of the MARC 21 Authority Format to allow recording of titles associated with persons other than those covered by the current subfield definition.
KEYWORDS: Field 368 (AD); Other Attributes of Person or Corporate Body (AD); Subfield $d, in field 368 (AD); Title of person (AD); Term of rank or honor or office (AD)
RELATED: 2023-DP03; 2011-DP02, 2011-07, 2012-04
STATUS/COMMENTS:
02/02/23 – Discussion Paper 2023-DP03 was converted to a MARC Fast-Track proposal at MAC Midwinter meeting.
05/05/23 – Submitted to the MARC Steering Group for consideration as a MARC Fast-Track proposal.
05/15/23 – Results of MARC Steering Group review - Approved, with the amendment that subfield $d retain its current name: "Title of person".
06/21/23 – Changes made to the MARC documentation as part of MARC Update No. 36 (June 2023).
Field 368 is currently defined in the MARC Authority format as follows:
368 - Other Attributes of Person or Corporate Body (R)
Indicators
Field Definition and Scope
Any attribute that serves to characterize a person or corporate body or that may be needed for differentiation from other persons or corporate bodies and for which separate content designation is not already defined.
For a person: Can include designations of the title of a person or other attributes.
For a corporate body: Can include designations indicating the type of corporate body or jurisdiction, or other attributes.
In 2013, the RDA definition was revised to "a word or phrase indicative of royalty, nobility, or ecclesiastical rank or office, a term of address for a person of religious vocation, or another term indicative of rank, honour or office." In 2015, the JSC added text to RDA clarifying that it also includes letters after the name that indicate academic distinctions or membership in organizations: "A word or phrase indicative of royalty, nobility, ecclesiastical rank or office, or a term of address for a person of religious vocation. A title of person includes other terms indicative of rank, honour, or office, including initials or abbreviations representing an academic degree, or membership in an organization, and excludes terms of address that simply indicate gender or marital status such as Mr. or Mrs." RDA 9.4.1.9 was added to cover other terms of rank, honour, or office and to provide examples:$d - Title of person
Designation indicative of royalty, nobility, or ecclesiastical rank or office, or a term of address for a person of religious vocation.
9.4.1.9 Other Term of Rank, Honour, or Office
Record a term indicative of rank, honour, or office if the term appears with the name. Record the term in the language in which it was conferred or in the language used in the country in which the person resides.EXAMPLE
Captain
Reverend
Sir
Ph. D.
Abbreviation for an academic degreeOrdine di Vittorio Veneto
An Italian order of knighthoodFRCVS
An award given by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
In official RDA, the title of person element has been renamed "term of rank or honour or office." The definition remains the same as it was in the 2015 revision of original RDA: "A word or phrase indicative of royalty, nobility, ecclesiastical rank or office, or a term of address for a person of religious vocation. A term of rank, honour, or office, includes initials or abbreviations representing an academic degree, or membership in an organization, and excludes terms of address that simply indicate gender or marital status such as Mr. or Mrs."
The previous paper, 2023-DP03, was generally supported by the MARC Advisory Committee at the 2023 Midwinter meeting, and a motion was approved to convert the paper into a fast-track proposal.
MARC 21 Authority field 368 subfield $d was never updated to reflect the revised scope of the RDA Title of Person element. It retains the narrower scope from 2012. Ever since the expansion of the scope of the Title of Person element in RDA, NACO catalogers have used 368 $d to record other terms of rank, honor, or office, despite the fact that such additional terms are currently out of scope for this subfield. Some examples found in the LC/NACO Authority File include:
The RDA to MARC Authority Mapping in original RDA (http://original.rdatoolkit.org/jscmap3_jscmap3-9999.html) supports what catalogers in NACO have been doing, because it maps RDA 9.4 Title of Person to MARC 368 $d (as well as the 100, 400, and 500 fields). Hence, it makes sense to revise the definition of subfield $d to bring it into alignment with RDA and with actual NACO practice. And with the change to the element name in official RDA, it probably also makes sense to revise the name of the subfield.100 1# $a Abercrombie, John, $c Dr.
