- - Significance: Parker Center is significant as an important example of International Style architecture, and as the work of architect Welton Becket, who hired influential landscape architect Ralph D. Cornell to assist in the facility's landscape design. Parker Center reflects Becket's "Total Design" philosophy. Known today for Los Angeles works such as the Capitol Records Building, the Beverly Hilton, the Cinerama Dome, and the Los Angeles Music Center, Becket led a team consisting of Cornell, architects, and artists who designed every aspect of Parker Center. A prolific Southern California landscape architect who worked on numerous parks, universities, and office complexes, Cornell selected Parker Center's plantings and natural landscape features, while Becket and architect J. E. Stanton designed the facilities hardscape elements. Parker Center is also significant for its association with the career of William H. Parker, who served as Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department from 1950 to his sudden death in 1966. An influential figure in Los Angeles history, Parker distinguished himself as a pioneer of the police professionalism movement, and helped shaped modern police administration and procedure in the United States. Parker Center embodies its namesake's efforts to centralize various elements of the police force at a single headquarters facility.
