Notes
- - Significance: The Ark of Hungerford Creek represents a rare surviving example of a converted lifeboat that was intended as a chapel and is a great example of vernacular architecture. The lifeboat itself is probably the largest surviving artifact from any of the four ex-German passenger ships that formed the 'Ghost Fleet,' which dominated the waterfront of Solomons, Maryland, in the 1920s and 1930s. The Ark was originally a lifeboat on Kronprinzessin Cecelie, a 706', 19,503 gross ton passenger ship built in 1906 by AG Vulcan Stettin for North German Lloyd. As built, Kronprinzessin Cecelie was equipped with a full set of wooden lifeboats located under radial arm davits. This passenger ship was the last of four great liners built by the company to challenge British domination of the lucrative North Atlantic passenger trade. After a brief, but successful, peacetime career, the ship was interned in the United States shortly after the outbreak of World War I in 1914. When the United States entered the war on the side of the Allies, the ship was seized on April 6, 1917, and transferred to the Navy. Following a hasty conversion into a troop transport at the Boston Navy Yard, the ship was renamed Mount Vernon and commissioned on July 28.
