- - Significance: Taken as the whole, the design of the Doughoregan landscape may be aptly termed "Georgian." The distinct separation of the Doughoregan landscape into formal, functional, and naturalistic sectors ordered around a prominent country residence is indicative of plantations during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Numerous colonial Chesapeake terraced gardens survive today in varying degrees of preservation, restoration, and/or reconstruction. Similarly, an impressive number of formal manor houses also survive, as do collections and isolated examples of slave quarters and other eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century agricultural buildings. What is distinctive about the landscape at Doughoregan is that it encompasses all of these elements while also retaining its surrounding fields and woods that were representative of the rural Maryland estate. The survival of so many elements that make up the collective landscape is uncommon. While certainly the landscape has been altered over the last three centuries, there are many features that have survived that make Doughoregan a uniquely intact historic landscape. Over the past three centuries, Doughoregan has undergone numerous alterations to the built environment and landscape as well as substantial reductions in the original property boundaries. Despite these alterations, Doughoregan remains an excellent example of an eighteenth-century Maryland plantation, retaining its manor house and many of its original domestic and agricultural buildings, as well as notable landscape features such as gardens, terraces, walls, paths, roads, and agricultural fields. It has been described as "the most complete Eighteenth Century farm still extant in its Eighteenth Century form." It has also maintained a high degree of historic integrity in its setting, feeling, and association that is perhaps unique in Maryland. Furthermore, because Doughoregan has remained a working farm in the possession of the Carroll family for its entire existence, it successfully illustrates changes in architecture, landscape design, domestic improvements, land use and crop diversity, advancement in agriculture, changes in the available labor force, and religious freedom in colonial and post-Colonial Maryland as reflected in the built environment.
