- - Significance: Listed as one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2018, Ship on the Desert is a significant example of mid-twentieth century modernism in West Texas. Designed by the New York-based architecture firm, Milliken and Bevin, Ship on the Desert was constructed between 1941 and 1945 as a summer residence for the Wallace Pratt family. Through its use of local stone, the design retained a rustic quality that is in harmony with its surrounding landscape. The house was designed to resemble an oil tanker at sea, a tribute to Pratt's long career in the oil industry. The family donated the house and its 4,942-acre land to the National Park Service in 1959 with an additional donation of 690 acres in the early 1960s. The gift led to the creation of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park in 1972, which contained additional buildings, including the Pratt Cabin, Frijole Ranch and schoolhouse, Williams Ranch, and Hunter Line Shack.
