Central compartments contain gilt foliate designs, with larger compartments filled with pointillé tooling. The central ornament is an elaborately tooled gilt wheel / rose-window. The binding appears to be modelled after a 17th century antecedent, described as "in the style of Gascon." See Brunet, G. La Reliure ancienne et moderne, 1884 (plate 70). Doublures (front and back) of dark brown crushed morocco with gilt fillets and framing, front doublure signed: Thibaron-Joly. Gilt edges. Combed marbled endpapers. Protective case of dark brown morocco fashioned in book form with gilt spine title and fillets and marbled edges, also signed by the binder.
