Background
vLex was founded in Barcelona in 1998. After quickly becoming a market leader in online legal research in Spain, they added collections of European legal materials to their platform. In 2002 they expanded into Latin America, and today have the most extensive collection of legal materials throughout the region and offices in 2008 saw the launch of the vLex Global platform, which aggregates comprehensive legal materials from over 100 countries searchable in 13 query languages. This continually developing platform remains the home for the vast collections of legal materials available through vLex. In recent years a comprehensive collection of United States Federal & State primary legal materials have been added to the platform.

There has also been an initiative with Justia and Compass to provide Canadian case law through two new platforms, vLex Open Canada and vLex Canada, building on the editorial expertise that made the Maritime Law Book such an important resource. The acquisition of UK-legal publisher Justis in March 2019 added exclusive common law and offshore materials throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland, Jersey, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia. Today vLex has dual-headquarters in Miami, Florida and Barcelona, Spain and offices in London, Madrid, Ottawa, Buenos Aires, Bogota, Brasilia, Santiago de Chile, Lima and Mexico City.
