Book/Printed Material Bird day; how to prepare for it,
About this Item
Title
- Bird day; how to prepare for it,
Summary
- Bird Day joined Arbor Day as an important opportunity for formal conservation training and reflection in the nation's schools at the turn of the twentieth century, and the Library of Congress has a number of state school Bird Day observance publications from this era, some of which reflect joint observances of Bird and Arbor Days. This little book, which was extremely popular and went through several editions, is written by the man who originated Bird Day, the Superintendent of Schools in Oil City, Pennsylvania. It includes a history of the Day, practical suggestions for its observance (in line with school practices, to judge by the state manuals at the Library of Congress), and informative material stressing the importance of bird protection, with suggestions for integrating bird conservation education into the school curriculum. Bird Day has been all but forgotten, not least by historians of conservationism; this book shows why its significance in American conservation history must not be overlooked. American Memory.
