About The Gem State Rural (Caldwell, Idaho) 1895-1910

The Gem State Rural began publishing in Caldwell in 1895 and was published by Gem State Rural Publishing Company under that title until 1910. The paper published on the fifteenth of every month with four columns on eight pages. In 1901 the publication schedule changed to weekly on Thursdays. The Rural expanded to twelve pages in 1904. In 1907, it reverted to a monthly publication schedule and began printing twenty-page issues on the first of every month. The paper covered news that would be of note to ranchers and farmers in Idaho. It gathered agricultural data, reported on agricultural activities, and gave accurate information about crop conditions. Albert Eugene Gipson founded and edited the paper in addition to acting as dean of Agricultural Editors of the Pacific Northwest.

The Gem State Rural advertised itself in its masthead as “A paper devoted to Horticultural, Stock, Farm and Irrigation matters, and the only Publication of the kind in the state.” The paper covered news of nearly every aspect of rural life. It regularly published a column titled “Horticultural,” that discussed the growing of crops. The paper also covered other parts of rural life in a variety of columns like “Stock and Dairy,” “Poultry and Pet Stock,” “Poultry and Apiary,” “General Crop Notes,” “Wool Clip,” “Dry Land Farming,” and “Irrigation Items.” These columns offered news and advice on a range of topics, from pest abatement, to disease control, to pruning techniques. The “Household Department” featured recipes. “Local and Personal Mention” contained the news of local individuals—usually news related to their livestock or crops. The Rural also was the official organ of the Idaho State Horticultural Society and the Idaho Poultry Association.

From 1910 until 1916, the paper was titled the Gem State Rural and Idaho Stockman. In 1916, the paper combined with the Idaho Farmer to create The Gem State Rural and Idaho Farmer. In 1920, the paper’s title changed to The Idaho Farmer. The Idaho Farmer published until 1971 when the title changed again to the Idaho Farmer-Stockman.
