  • In Part 1 of this 3-part interview, Dr. Barbara Hatcher explains what inspired her to become a nurse and shares her educational journey, noting the racism she faced along the way. She details her early nursing career as well as her work with the D.C. government, the American Public Health Association, and the World Federation of Public Health Associations. She also talks about her teaching career and her consulting business. She concludes by discussing her membership in Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. and sharing some advice for those considering becoming a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). In part 2, Dr. Hatcher talks about being named a Fellow of the Academy of Nursing. In part 3, Dr. Hatcher shares additional information about her nursing career, including her experience as the Chair of the District of Columbia's Board of Nursing; her participation in the National Institutes of Health's D.C. Initiative to Reduce Infant Mortality; her work with the Healthy Start program; her involvement with political action committees; her work with the World Justice Forum; her role as the editor-in-chief of the JOCEPS (Journal of Chi Eta Phi Sorority); and her involvement with the National Black Nurses Association. She also talks about her involvement with her church, and the sexism and racism she witnessed within the World Federation of Public Health Associations. She concludes by describing her consulting business and discussing equity in healthcare.
