Summary
- Geographers on film is a collection of recorded video interviews conducted with hundreds of geographers between August 1970 and the early 1990s, including scholars who have shaped the discipline. The interviews highlight the rapid transformations in technology throughout the 20th century that brought about vast changes in people's daily lives and in how geographers conducted research. In this interview, Professor Bill Garrison of the University of Pittsburgh discusses his education and early career, the influence of J. Russell Whitaker, and how his work as meteorologist has helped him with statistics. He talks about his work with Donald Hudson and Ed Ullman at the University of Washington, the quantitative revolution in geography and changes since the 1950s. He discusses his work with economists, and engineers and answers questions about the National Science Foundation Summer Institutes at Northwestern in the early 1960s. He talks about what he sees as the future of geography: the interrelation of complex information systems to support decision making; doing creative, action-oriented things which improve the environment in which we live.
