Summary
- Geographers on film is a collection of recorded video interviews conducted with hundreds of geographers between August 1970 and the early 1990s, including scholars who have shaped the discipline. The interviews highlight the rapid transformations in technology throughout the 20th century that brought about vast changes in people's daily lives and in how geographers conducted research. In this interview, James Parsons discusses his education and early career. He went to UC Berkeley to study journalism. After graduation, he worked on a newspaper in northern California, then went to graduate school. Having taken an undergraduate course with Dr. Carl Sauer, he was admitted into the geography department. He enjoyed working with the strong group of geographers. Because of Sauer he became interested in Latin America. He discusses his interest in culture and environment and how the geography students benefit from the other faculty and departments of the University--cultural anthropology, soil science, forestry--the humanistic interests of others have fed the geography program. He talks about his doctoral dissertation on Antioquia in Columbia, his interest in biogeography and the effect of human activities on environmental health. He talks about how his time as a newspaperman informs his current interests. He sees himself, his students and his colleagues at Berkeley not as regionalists, but as cultural geographers, biogeographers, and physical geographers working within a particular regional context.
