Summary

  • Geographers on film is a collection of recorded video interviews conducted with hundreds of geographers between August 1970 and the early 1990s, including scholars who have shaped the discipline. The interviews highlight the rapid transformations in technology throughout the 20th century that brought about vast changes in people's daily lives and in how geographers conducted research. In this interview, Bill Bunge discusses his education and teachers at University of Wisconsin and the University of Washington and his controversial career. He answers questions about his mentors and others who influenced him: Gwendolyn Warren, John Watson and Duke Renford. He talks about his disagreement with Richard Hartshorne on the theory of uniqueness and his reversal on that theory. He talks about his problems with adademia, his activism and his work with communities in Detroit and Toronto. He discusses his Geographical Expeditions (Detroit and Toronto), his move to Canada, the role of social involvement in geography in which the ultimate imperative is that space must be protective of children.
