No date is given for the essay, though it is probably 1961-62, like other drafts of material that was eventually condensed as part of Bernays's memoir, The Biography of An Idea (1965). The period of time covered in the fashion essay is 1925 to 1927. The essay refers to Stuart Chase's critique of advertising and consumerism in the February 16, 1927, issue of The Nation, in which advertising man Bruce Barton and publicist Ivy Lee come in for particular satire.
