  • -  Geraldine Johnson described Ila Patton's quilts as "not fancy, but very interesting and well made." They include utility crazy and strip quilts, as well as a recent Cathedral Window, which is a novelty construction popular in the 1970s. The variety of Mrs. Patton's quilts, her recollections of learning to quilt from her grandmother, and her primary interest in making quilts for family rather than to sell are some of the key elements brought out in this "very useful and informative" interview.
  • -  Transcription: GJ: Now what, do you have a name for this one? / IP: Well, I, let's see. / GJ: It's got the pieces in between. / IP: Yeah, it's pieced in a three block each way, and then it's set up with a diamond on each corner, diamond shape here? And then it's got these, about two inch strips set up with it, solid colors between each block, you see here? / GJ: Right, right. And then this is quilted with thread / IP: It's quilted, and then it's run, like I told you, from one corner to the other corner, don't you see? / GJ: Now why did you decide to do this in white thread, do you think? / IP: Well, I don't know, it's just to match up the lining here, I reckon. See it's a white lining. See, you turn the top over and hem it on the wrong side. Now I like it that way too, don't you? / GJ: Yes, oh, that looks pretty. / IP: Just turn over a little hem. And whip it all the way around. / GJ: And then this is one that's tied -- that's tacked. / IP: Yeah, now that's a tack. They call them tacks. / GJ: And how is this one pieced together. Is this in blocks, isn't it? / IP: Yeah, just in blocks. / GJ: Some blocks are pieced and some are just solid pieces of material. / IP: Yeah. There's, say three squares each way in a block makes nine blocks, you see, and just set up the solid squares. / GJ: And this one's tacked. / IP: Yeah, this is tacked.
