About Palisadian (Cliffside Park, N.J.) 1906-Current

The Palisadian began in September 1906 as monthly newspaper in the recently formed Palisade section of Bergen County, NJ. The area was popular with New York commuters as it was on the border of New Jersey and New York and promoted itself as being “ten minutes and ten cents” away from New York. What began as an eight-page, four column paper whose mission, according to its first editorial, was to “note current events in the Palisade section, to present matters of general interest and to be always pure in tone” soon grew to a twenty-page plus monthly village newspaper. The first anniversary issue of the paper says it was never started as a money-making venture but as a chronicler of events.

The newspaper’s founder and editor was Charles T. Logan. Logan began his newspaper career with The Atlanta Constitution, where he was a protégé of Henry W. Grady, before he moved to New York to work with several metropolitan newspapers and then transitioned to advertising with the Beckwith Advertising Agency and with the weekly Editor and Publisher. Logan started the magazine when his son, Charles. T. Logan, Jr., expressed a desire to become a journalist at age fourteen. His son was nominal editor and publisher of the paper initially and later took an active role in gathering and publishing news content. By 1908, he was listed as manager. It was his journalistic efforts which led to his death in 1916 at age 25. He had contracted infantile paralysis (polio) while out with borough officials investigating cases in the area in order to cover the outbreak in the newspaper.

The Palisadian offered thorough coverage of local issues specific to the development of Palisade and the surrounding area. Shortly after the founding of Palisade, a Tax Payer’s Association was formed with the view to safeguard the interests of the community. In addition to supporting the laying of roads and sidewalks and the building of schools, the Tax Payer’s Association was responsible for social activities, and the Palisadian covered all of its balls, masquerades, tennis, whist, and teas. Largely absent from the monthly edition of the newspaper was coverage of events in wider New Jersey and the United States.

During the last quarter of 1914 the Palisadian had transitioned to a weekly eight-page newspaper published on Saturday. Charles T. Logan, Jr. had been a student at Columbia University but took an illness related sabbatical in 1914 and then, after a brief return, permanently withdrew in order to dedicate himself to the development of the newspaper in 1915 until his death in 1916. The January 2, 1915 newspaper represented the first time that the paper had been printed in its own plant, from its own presses. As a weekly paper, the Palisadian still offered strong coverage of local issues but also featured articles about the war in Europe and female suffrage.

Charles T. Logan continued to publish the paper he and his son had founded until his death in 1929. The Palisadian operated as a weekly newspaper covering the Palisades region of Bergen county until around 2006–2007 when the New Jersey Media Guide announced the paper was no longer being published.
