About The Cumberland Echo (Cumberland, O. [Ohio]) 1892-1952
This weekly eight-page newspaper served the village of Cumberland, a modest-sized town in Guernsey County, Ohio. According to Cyrus P. B. Sarchet’s History of Guernsey County, Ohio, the Cumberland Echo was established in September 1885 as the Cumberland News before changing its title in 1892. A different source, History of Early Cumberland by May Stranathan (who also happened to be one of the Echo’s publishers in the 1890s), agrees that the Echo was founded in 1892, but contests that the News was discontinued in 1889, and that the two titles were unrelated. In whatever case, the Cumberland Echo was one of the only known newspapers in the town’s history, and unquestionably its longest tenured.
The Echo aspired to be “the best home newspaper in the country,” and its news coverage could range from hyper-local to international, as seen in its issue of April 28, 1898. That day’s paper led with news of the recently initiated Spanish-American War, while its back pages contained a scattering of local happenings, such as a Cumberland resident’s mule getting loose in town. Issues also featured a wide assortment of lifestyle content and advertisements for Guernsey County businesses. Per Sarchet, the Cumberland Echo was initially politically independent, though the Directory of Ohio Newspapers suggests that it became a Republican publication in 1916, possibly a result of one of the Echo’s several ownership changes over the years. The last confirmed issue of the Cumberland Echo was printed in August 1952, though it is not entirely clear why it stopped publishing, and the village of Cumberland has not hosted its own newspaper since.
