  • -  The San Juan News was a bilingual (English-Spanish) newspaper published in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The first issue appeared on November 10, 1898 (La correspondencia de Puerto Rico, 11 de noviembre de 1898, p. 1), with S.E. DeRackin and George S. Bird as proprietors. DeRackin left the San Juan News in 1899 and Bird took over as editor of the newspaper (La correspondencia, 6 de septiembre de 1899, p. 2). In March 1904, Bird left the newspaper and the News passed into the hands of Abraham Kopel, the new principal editor, and Adolfo Lespier who edited the Spanish sections (La democracia, 15 de marzo de 1904, p. 3, 6). Owing to pressures from his position as a judge, Kopel resigned as editor of the News after only a few months (San Juan news, June 8, 1904, p. 2). After about two months of no principal editor Adolfo Lespier became sole editor of the newspaper. On March 20, 1905, the San Juan News published its final issue (La democracia, 21 de marzo de 1905, p. 4) because, the following day, a court order passed control of the newspaper's property to De Ford and Company (La democracia, 22 de marzo de 1905, p. 1). The News was being sued for breach of contract with De Ford and Company (La correspondencia, 24 de marzo de 1905, p. 2). The News filed a claim against the Company in return, while the employees of the News sued the newspaper for salaries owed (La democracia, 22 de marzo de 1905, p. 1). In April, it was announced that the San Juan News would return as a government publication (Boletín mercantil de Puerto Rico, 11 de abril de 1905, p. 5). Despite the announcement, the News didn't make the news until mid-May, when it was announced that several people collectively purchased the printing press of the San Juan News. The new News owners intended to begin publishing the Porto Rico News, a successor to the San Juan News, with the first issue to be expected on June 1, 1905 (Boletín mercantil, 18 de mayo de 1905, p. 2), however the first issue was delayed to June 20 (La correspondencia, 1 de junio de 1905, p. 3). Due to a shipment of machinery not arriving on time, the first issue was delayed, again (La correspondencia, 1 de junio de 1905, p. 3). The Porto Rico News successfully met its third launch date, publishing its first issue on June 25, 1905 (La correspondencia, 26 de junio de 1905, p. 3). The Porto Rico News was short-lived, publishing its final issue on August 6, 1905 (Boletín mercantil, 8 de agosto de 1905, p. 2). There is a discrepancy in some sources regarding the publication date of the final issue of the San Juan News, which is most likely the result of a typo, "20 de mayo, 1905" instead of "20 de marzo, 1905".
