Summary

• By some accounts, Jacksonville's (FL) weekly Dixie [LCCN sn92060426] continued the Sun (Jacksonville, FL) [LCCN: sn95047216]. In fact, there was a two year suspension of publication between the two titles. The editor, Claud L'Engle was the same, but he was succeeded by Robert McNamee, 1914-1917. The Dixie was self-described as "Democratic". At various times, its masthead bore the mottos: "If it's right, we are for it" and "In Dixieland I'll take my stand." But the Dixie was also decried as anything but democratic. The Dixie represented Southern and, specifically, white male opinion. And, it would foretell the rise of the Dixiecrat among Democrats in America's South later in the 20th century. Claude L'Engle (1868-1919), a native of Jacksonville and United States Representative for Florida's fourth Congressional district roughly spanning northeast Florida from Jacksonville to Tallahassee from 1913 through 1915. Earlier, L'Engle also edited Tallahassee's Morning Sun [LCCN sn95047371] and Jacksonville's Sun. L'Engle was occasionally criticized for his anti-free speech and anti-Catholic opinions.
