About El Clamor Público (Los Angeles, Calif.) 1855-1859

Established in July of 1855 by Francisco P. Ramirez when he was just 19 years old, El Clamor Público was one of the first Spanish-language newspapers published after California became a state. Ramirez had recently been the Spanish-language editor of the Los Angeles Star, the first paper published in Los Angeles. From 1851 to 1855, the Los Angeles Star printed half in English and half in Spanish. El Clamor Público appeared weekly through August of 1859, for a total of 232 four-page issues.

Distributed as far north as San Francisco, El Clamor Público became known for both its defense of Spanish-speaking populations and its publication of poetry and literature. Initially moderate in tone, the paper evolved into an activist tabloid, particularly after several lynchings by Anglo mobs. By early 1859, Ramirez’s increasingly strident tone seems to have alienated many readers and advertisers, and later that year, he announced that his paper was for sale.
