Newspaper The Thlinget (Sitka, Alaska) 1908-1912
About The Thlinget (Sitka, Alaska) 1908-1912
Published monthly at the Sitka Training School between August 1908 and June 1912, the Thlingit stands out as a publication written by and for Alaska Native tribespeople. Volume 1, No. 1 states: “Our Paper bears the name of The Thlingit not because this is the name of the largest tribe of Alaskan natives but because it means ‘the people.’ Although primarily a school paper The Thlingit will be constantly devoted to the welfare of all native people of Alaska.”
Judge James Wickersham, in A Bibliography of Alaskan Literature, incorrectly lists the Thlingit as the Sitka Thlingit. Edited by George J. Beck between December 1911 and June 1912, the Thlingit preceded the Verstovian, which started its run October 1914 at Sheldon Jackson School, formerly called the Sitka Training School.
