About Boletin Obrero (Tampa, Fla.) 1903-190?
Boletin Obrero was a labor paper from Ybor City, Tampa, Florida first published in 1903 at the Centro Obrero. Its masthead identifies it as an “Organo de propaganda organizadora” (“Organ of organized propaganda”). Boletin Obrero advocated on behalf of workers and encouraged unionization, comradery, and mutual support among tobacco workers mainly in Tampa, but also across North America. The paper often carried news and calls for mutual aid from areas with significant populations of tobacco workers including Key West, Fla. and Waycross, Ga. in the United States and in Montreal, Canada.
The four-page paper was published weekly on Fridays in Spanish with occasional Italian content. Recurring sections like the “Sección Official” published union telegrams, meeting times, and events. The “De Administración” section listed the names and pseudonyms of groups and individuals who paid for the issue, the amount paid, operating costs, and available funds. The paper also frequently published lists of cigar factories in Tampa and the sums their workers raised to support striking cigar workers in Montreal, strengthening workers’ rights and bargaining power across North America. The paper also published pro-labor poetry.
Many authors are named at the bottom of their articles, including Francisco Milian, Mayor of Ybor and lector at the Bustillo Brothers and Diaz cigar factory. As a lector, or “reader,” Milian was one of many men and women who read newspapers and other texts aloud to cigar factories workers daily. Material to be read was selected by vote by the cigar workers, who also paid the lector. Newspapers such as Boletin Obrero, El Federal, El Internacional and La Gaceta reflect the varied interests of tobacco factory workers, which included workers’ rights, local news, international politics, poetry, and literature.
