About The Kennecott Star (Kennecott, Alaska) 1937-1938

The Kennecott Star was a student newspaper published at the Blackburn School in Kennicott from 1937 to 1938. The publisher’s block noted that it was intended as a “supplementary grammar exercise” for the students who worked on it.

The paper reported on school news as well as the local news around Kennicott, including comings and goings. Other items included were original works of fiction and book reviews written by the students. The Star also had columns on topics like trade, mining, and medical treatments. The paper ran a Health Day Extra on May 1, 1938, that encouraged people to get vaccinated against smallpox and diphtheria and gave a list of warning symptoms of tuberculosis, advising people to get tested by their doctor if they were unsure.

The Star closed their final issue with a note that if the school re-opened next year the paper would return, but otherwise it would remain suspended. As expected, the Kennecott Copper Corporation shut down its mining operations in Kennecott in 1938, the railroad stopped operating, and Kennicott became a ghost town.

Note on spelling: In general, the town, river, and glacier near McCarthy are spelled Kennicott, after Robert Kennicott, but an early misspelling named the large copper mine in the area, and the company that ran it, Kennecott. Usage of the two spellings has been inconsistent over time.
