About Buckeye Valley News and Continuation of the Buckeye Review (Buckeye, Maricopa County, Ariz.) 1935-1935

Park R. Mitten started the weekly Buckeye Valley News in Buckeye, Arizona, on February 12, 1912, the same date that Arizona achieved statehood, and Mitten noted this significance in the first issue. The newspaper stated its mission was “to ‘boost’ the Valley and publish the local news of the community,” and that “politically the News will remain independent.” Its initial slogan was “Buckeye Valley, The Land of Alfalfa Seed,” recognizing the importance of agriculture in Phoenix’s West Valley.

The paper was filled with Buckeye community news and reported on surrounding communities, such as Arlington, Liberty, and Palo Verde. Local businesses advertised in its pages, selling seed sacks, canned goods, and farm equipment like haying tools and reapers. There was reporting on droughts, floods, irrigation, and a new ice factory. Columns advocated for community development, such as the need for a high school in Buckeye and for better roads between Phoenix and the West Valley.

In 1920, the News reported on the arrival of a “modern ginning plant” installed by the Dunlop Tire and Rubber Company to process the large cotton crops grown in the Buckeye Valley. The company also facilitated the delivery of electric power to the valley, which had “been the dream of many of our leading citizens for years” (April 22, 1920). In early 1923, publication of the Buckeye Valley News ceased when Mitten purchased the Chandler Arizonan and moved to Chandler, southeast of Phoenix.

Otto Paulson restarted the Buckeye Valley News in August 1933, with a new layout and look, and the newspaper’s numbering reset to volume 1, number 1. An article on the history of newspapers in Buckeye stated this was “the first edition of the second Buckeye Valley News,” and that “Mr. Paulson did not know until afterwards that he was taking the name of the former Buckeye paper that had closed up some ten years before” (September 7, 1950). The paper had typically been four pages but expanded to eight pages in 1934, though there were sometimes longer issues, and it became shorter again in the 1940s. For several years in the mid-1930s, the newspaper reported on an annual multi-day event in Buckeye, “Helzapoppin,” which featured agricultural displays, a parade, a rodeo, and the selection of a “Cotton Queen.” The newspaper used large headlines to announce the festival and reported on celebrity guests, including “singing cowboy” Gene Autry.

In May 1935, the Buckeye Review was purchased from Harold H. Wrenn and consolidated with the Buckeye Valley News with a title change to Buckeye Valley News and Continuation of the Buckeye Review. A few months later “continuation” was dropped from the name, and the newspaper became the Buckeye Valley News and Buckeye Review in August 1935. Paulson sold the newspaper to Charles Crouch in September 1950, and it became the Buckeye Valley News again, continuing under that title and several different publishers.
