VIII. Design and 3D
This content area focuses on the built environment, architectural drawings, stage plans for performance spaces, technical schematics, engineering plans, manufacturing designs and similar. Also included, at this time, are formats related to digitized 3D objects that may be included in mixed format acquisitions.
NOTE: See also Still Image Works for image formats as well as GIS, Geospatial and Non-GIS Cartographic and Software and Video Games for related 3D, dynamic and interactive formats.

Preferred |
Acceptable |
| A. Formats (raster) |
|
|
| B. Formats (vector) |
|
- Extensible 3D (X3D)
- 3D Manufacturing Format (3MF)
- Non-proprietary formats endorsed as standards by a professional community or government agency, e.g. IFC, STEP
- Page-layout formats, e.g. PDF/UA (ISO 14289-1-compliant), PDF/A (ISO 19005-compliant) including PDF/A-4e (ISO 19005-4 Annex B), PDF (highest quality available, with features such as searchable text, embedded fonts, lossless compression, high resolution images; includes document formats such as PDF/X)
- Proprietary vector formats, e.g., AutoCAD Drawing file Family (.dwg)
|
| C. Technical Characteristics |
- Highest resolution available, not rescaled or interpolated
- Highest bit depth available, 16 bits per channel if available
- Specified color space used in published version
- Uncompressed
- Layered, if supported
|
- Lower compression ratios
- Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) preferred to discrete cosine transform (DCT)
|
D. Related Materials
|
- Include, if available, indexes, annotations, accompanying tabular or textual matter or other interpretive aids
|
|
| E. Metadata |
- As supported by format:
- Title
- Creator
- Creation Date
- Place of publication
- Publisher/producer/distributor
- Contact information
- Include if available:
- Common embedded schema (e.g., FGD, ISO 19115)
- Language of work
- Other relevant identifiers (e.g., DOI, LCCN, etc.)
- Subject descriptors
- Abstracts
- Key or reference to each data field and technical production information (type of paper, how processed, publisher internal tracking numbers)
|
- Metadata provided separately in external text or XML-based file
|
| F. Technological Measures |
Files must contain no measures (such as digital rights management [DRM] technologies or encryption) that control access to or prevent use of the digital work.

| ii. Design (schematics, architectural drawings) - Print |
| |
Preferred |
Acceptable |
| A. Faithful representation of the work |
Equal in quality to the published version, best edition or master/primary copy
|
|
| B. Permanence and appearance |
- Packaging materials equivalent to published form (e.g., binding, box/packaging materials)
- If multiple versions available, provide the most widely distributed edition.
- If limited edition, provide an unnumbered but otherwise identical copy.
- For large items, provide rolled, unfolded.
- Prefer edition with protective coatings.
- Faithful representation of the work as published. Equal quality to publication version.
