Notes
- - Carbon typescript of a fourteen-page fund-raising proposal letter, dated December 4, 1930, written by Robert Lynd of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) to J. Steele Gow, executive director of the Maurice and Laura Falk Foundation. It explains the importance of "investment at this time in research in the field of the Social Sciences." Lynd suggested eleven areas in which the SSRC, an endowed foundation, was eager to undertake study. The first area listed in this sketch of a grand plan to survey changes sweeping over American society in the 1920s was the "Economics of Consumption . . . a well-nigh virgin field." The Maurice and Laura Falk Foundation of Pittsburgh did, in fact, fund a somewhat later study, titled "America's Capacity to Consume," but it was published by the Brookings Institution, not the SSRC. Reproduced as facsimile page images: 14 pages.
