• -  Significance: The Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, Administration Building is a good example of a cemetery building constructed in a modern Hawaiian style. It is also architecturally significant as a good example of the work of Wimberly, Whisenand, Allison & Tong, who were strong proponents of regionally appropriate modern architecture in Hawaii. In addition, it is significant for its associations with the development of memorial parks in Hawaii. The 240-acre memorial park is the most elaborate, as well as the largest, memorial park in Hawaii. The well designed memorial park well exemplifies the precepts introduced at Forest Lawn, which became the norm in America's postwar period. With its grave markers flush with the lawn, its well designed and executed landscape program, and the inclusion of sculptural works of art and iconic buildings in a verdant setting, the memorial park presents a dramatic and serene setting where loved ones may repose in eternal peace. One of the building's unique features is a reinforced concrete, tripartite gateway, which has an open framework on its front and rear sides. Its side walls taper inward as they rise upward, providing a modern form that is reminiscent of an ancient Hawaiian lele, a tower-like altar or stand for offerings to the gods.
