About The Irish News and Chicago Citizen (Chicago, Ill.) 1919-1922
The Citizen was founded by John F. Finerty in Chicago, Illinois in 1882. Published weekly, the Citizen advocated for the social and political advancement of the Irish people in America. Finerty declared that the Citizen would advocate for the independence of Ireland from British rule by any means necessary. The masthead announces this advocacy: “Europe, not England, is the Mother Country of America.”
John F. Finerty was born in Galway, Ireland, in 1846. He fled to the United States in 1864 to avoid arrest for his ties to Irish nationalist groups and the National Brotherhood of St. Patrick. In New York, Finnerty enlisted in a volunteer regiment, and then, in 1866, Finerty became a war correspondent for several Chicago newspapers, including the Chicago Post, the Chicago Tribune, and the Chicago Times. His reporting took him to the Western territories and Mexico where he covered conflict between white settlers and Native tribes. He settled in Chicago, and began publishing the Chicago Citizen, and served as its editor until his death on June 13, 1908. In his final decades, he also served as the first president of the United Irish League of America.
After the death of Finerty in 1908, his wife and son took over as editors of the Citizen until April 1909, when John P. Sutton became editor. After Sutton, the paper had a succession of editors. At times, the paper boasted being the “official newspaper of the A.O.H. [Ancient Order of the Hibernians] of Illinois and the United Irish Societies of Chicago and Cook County” (September 19, 1896). The Citizen reported on local Irish organizations and fraternal circles, including reporting on conventions and conferences and publishing society directories and lists of members.
The Citizen offered Irish communities in the Midwest a way to remain intricately connected to the land of their birth, while simultaneously encouraging them to improve their standing in America. Issues often included columns on “News from Ireland” and “Catholic News.” From March 1893 through September 1902, the Citizen and the Chicago Citizen ran, with some gaps in publication, a recurring column printed in Irish. This column was typically devoted to “Gaelic Poetry,” “Gaelic Folk-lore,” “Gaelic Prose,” or the “Gaelic Department,” though sometimes featured “Sgeulta Fiannaigheachta” (Fairytales) or “Sgeulta Fiannaigheachta” (Stories of Witnessing).
The paper changed names several times. In 1897, the Citizen became the Chicago Citizen. It became the Irish News and Chicago Citizen in 1919, and in 1922, was renamed the Chicago Citizen. Its last issue was published on November 9, 1928.
