Newspaper Quincy Herald (Quincy, Fla.) 1877-189? Herald
About Quincy Herald (Quincy, Fla.) 1877-189?
The Quincy Herald began publication on January 1, 1877 in Quincy, the county seat of Gadsden County, Florida. In 1892, it merged with the Quincy New Era. Following the merger, W.W. Keep, owner, publisher, and editor of the Quincy Herald, renamed the paper the Quincy Florida Herald, which he continued to own and operate.
The four-page weekly published every Saturday and billed itself as the “Official paper of the City and County.” The newspaper published many legal and government notices, including court proceedings, public meetings and auctions, new laws, elections, and the postal service. The paper leaned Democratic but did not clearly spell out its political stance. It gave more coverage to Southern Democratic candidates and conventions while frequently discussing the Republican party in an unflattering and critical light.
Railways, including Florida Central and Penninsular Railway, Florida Railway and Navigation, Florida Southern Railway, and the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railway are featured prominently in the paper, which regularly published schedules for these routes, news concerning railroad expansion in Florida, and support from the editor and other residents for their development in Gadsden County. Railroads were vital to shipping networks that supported Gadsden County’s agricultural economy. Savannah, GA was an especially important destination, and the Quincy herald regularly covered railway, shipping, and agricultural news from the port city. The top agricultural products mentioned in the Quincy herald were tobacco, cotton, and pecans.
W.W. Keep was well-connected to other newspapers in Florida and Georgia and often reprinted news items from other state and national papers, especially the Florida Times Union. The reprinted content most often concerned newspapers and editors in Florida, economic conditions and shipping in north Florida and southern Georgia, the tobacco industry, and unsympathetic views of the Republican party and African Americans.
The Quincy Herald also ran frequent ads for other newspapers, including the Savannah Morning News, Savannah Weekly News, the Times Democrat, and the Weekly Times-Democrat, as well as the Tobacco Leaf (New York, NY) and other agricultural periodicals.
